Has our educational system failed us?

"Get a good grade and enjoy for the rest of your life or else you would suffer". These were words of my lecturer because he has also been taught that your future lies on your school result. In the next 20 years there would be more graduates than we have ever had in human history and a degree would slowly lose it's worth. And what would be required is skill not a degree.

Why have our educational system not evolved to train skills? The world is evolving, people are generating more skills but the educational system has failed to get professionals train younger ones in these skills? Why don't we teach rap, spoken words, hip hop dance, social media, etc. We are yet to realize that people have different ways to express intelligence. The worst is when our Nigerian teachers flog a student for not knowing or memorizing an equation. Would flogging the child make him/her become a mathematics genius?

Our educational system makes genius feel like fools because they were born in a society that does
not appreciate special gift but rather appreciate "common gift". What have our educational system done to develop people with skills? How well have we tried to understand our students?

Every year we keep graduating "Intelligent dummies" that we are proud of simply because they followed the ways of their predecessors. We need to change our orientation to education, it is not just about cramming a text book, or reading to pass an examination. But rather it is about finding the best way to express ourselves. And our schools have failed in that aspect.

Don't tell us to get a job, tell us to create one because if we don't build our dreams, someone would hire us to help build theirs.
